World History: Databases

This guide covers research materials for all histories except for North America

Articles, Reports, Books and more....

There are many history databases that can be useful in your hunt for materials.  These are the best to start with, but be sure to go to OneSearch to find more materials.  Anything here is searched in OneSearch, but going directly to the individual databases can help to control how large your retrieval is.  Also, each of these databases is different, often using different key terms and language.

  • JSTOR  Contains periodical articles, some primary sources and books.  It is full text, interdisciplinary, and covers certain geographic areas, like Africa, better than other databases.  It does not contain the most recent 5 years, however.
  • Project Muse  Contains 600 high quality periodicals, as well as many ebooks from university and scholarly presses.

Foreign Newspapers

Finding current issues of foreign newspapers can be straightforward, if they are digital.  Back issues can be more complicated.  For that reason, for most searches, you should start with:

  • Nexis Uni (formerly, Lexis Nexis)  Provides full-text documents from over 5900 News, business, legal, medical and reference publications.
