AI Developments and Resources for Library Staff

A compilation of resources intended to help librarians stay current with AI trends and developments.

Prompt Engineering

"Prompting" is how a user interacts with a generative AI chatbot. The way a user prompts makes a huge difference in the output that AI tools will give you. Prompt engineering provides succinct details of what the tool should generate. Generally, the more context a user provides in the prompt, the more successful the output will be. It's worth learning how to do this in order to help students and instructors learn how to create better prompts and make AI significantly more useful.

Resources to help with prompt engineering:

OpenAI's Prompt Engineering Guide -  Strategies and tactics for getting better results from large language models (sometimes referred to as GPT models) like GPT-4o.

AI Prompts for Teaching: A Spellbook - Example prompts for tasks within and outside of the classroom.

AI for Education - A variety of prompts to help with lesson planning and administrative tasks using GenAI chatbots.

Ethan Mollick's More Useful Things -  A prompt library created using CC 4.0 licences. This collection provides prompts for instructor aids, student exercises, and more.
