Publishing Opportunities for Undergraduates: Home

A list of journals, organized by discipline, that publish undergraduate research and papers. The journals listed have an open submissions process, which allows undergraduates from any institution to submit a proposal for publication.

Undergraduate Research Journal
Undergraduate Research is a national double-blind, educator-reviewed print and electronic journal published annually in the winter. The journal is a forum for multidisciplinary undergraduate research and creative endeavors within higher education such as, but not limited to: Case studies, conceptual pieces, creative endeavors, creative writing, journalism writings, literature reviews, original art,  photography, scientific studies, etc.

American Journal of Undergraduate Research
American Journal of Undergraduate Research (AJUR) is a national, independent, faculty peer-reviewed, open-source, quarterly, multidisciplinary student research journal, established in 2002. Their mission is to peer-review, publish on the web and in print, and index scholarly and creative manuscripts written by undergraduates and with undergraduates’ participation, at no cost to authors. 

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research publishes original, scholarly research undertaken by undergraduates from any college or university. BJUR builds upon and strengthens Butler’s commitment to quality undergraduate research by providing an outlet for the publication of outstanding undergraduate scholarship across the humanities, social and natural sciences.

Journal of Undergraduate Research & Scholarly Excellence
JURSE is a peer-reviewed, undergraduate journal registered with the Library of Congress that accepts submissions of any subject, from any undergraduate institution. Their mission is to print outstanding undergraduate research, scholarly articles, and creative works to make them available to the public and connect the worldwide community of college undergraduates.

Midwest Journal of Undergraduate Research
Midwest Journal of Undergraduate Research (MJUR) is a multidisciplinary scholarly journal produced by a team of Monmouth College student editors and faculty members with peer and faculty (or experts in the field) reviewers for each article. Their mission is to support development of high-quality original undergraduate research, recognize exceptional undergraduate scholarly efforts and accomplishments, and contribute to the undergraduate learning experience.

PURSUE: Undergraduate Research Journal
PURSUE: Undergraduate Research Journal provides a platform for undergraduates to share original research. Articles are accepted in the broad categories of science, technology, communication, agriculture, mathematics, architecture, engineering, history, political science, health, and education. All articles in this journal are peer-reviewed by scientists and/or professionals in the field.

Reinvention: an International Journal of Undergraduate Research
Reinvention is an online, peer-reviewed journal, which welcomes academic articles from all disciplinary areas and all universities, and is dedicated to the publication of high-quality undergraduate student research. The journal was created in order to embrace the notion of academia as a community, with students playing a strong and active role in that community, and aims to support undergraduate students in their first foray into academic publishing. 

Process: Journal of Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Scholarship
Process: Journal of Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Scholarship provides an online space for undergraduate writers across the disciplines to share their work outside of the context and constraints of the college classroom. Each issue of Process centers on a topic of contemporary interest to a global audience, fostering critical conversations that traverse disciplinary, cultural, and national borders.

The Journal for Undergraduate Ethnography
The Journal for Undergraduate Ethnography (JUE) is an online publication for undergraduate academic writing. The JUE seeks to publish original ethnographic research by undergraduate students working in a variety of disciplines. Their goal is to bring readers insights into subcultures, practices, and social institutions.

Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research
The Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research is a new, refereed, multidisciplinary, online undergraduate journal that will advance knowledge in new scholarly arenas by presenting intellectual and reflective work by undergraduates. 

Journal of Student Research 
The Journal of Student Research (JSR) is an academic, multidisciplinary, and faculty-reviewed journal devoted to the rapid dissemination of current research published by high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. In general, papers on all topics are welcome to submit. Manuscript submission, peer review, and publication are all handled online, and the journal automates all clerical steps during peer review.

Liberated Arts: A Journal for Undergraduate Research 
Liberated Arts publishes radical and original student research on a variety of topics, with the aim of helping students participate in our wider academic research community. The journal is interdisciplinary in scope and perspective, and is founded on the academic collaboration between students, faculty and staff. They also welcome original graphics for the front journal 'cover'. 

INQUIRIES Journal
INQUIRIES Journal is an open-access academic journal that highlights the work of students at the undergraduate level and above. The journal publishes work across a range of academic disciplines with a particular focus on the social sciences, arts, and humanities.

Forbes and Fifth
Forbes & Fifth, a journal created by University of Pittsburgh undergraduates and sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity, unites works of research, creative writing, scholarly articles, and visual art under the banner of interdisciplinary collaboration.

HUMANITIES

Apollon Undergraduate eJournal
Apollon is an undergraduate digital journal in the humanities focused on producing annual issues of excellent, peer-reviewed work from participating colleges and universities across a range of disciplines and embracing the array of intellectual approaches valued by humanistic inquiry. Apollon strives to take advantage of the unique opportunity of venturing into the digital humanities by engaging with image, text, sound, video, and a variety of presentation platforms.

Queen City Writers
QCW is a refereed journal that publishes essays and multimedia work by undergraduate students affiliated with any post-secondary institution. Issues are published twice a year in fall and spring. They seek thought-provoking pieces from any disciplinary perspective that explore questions and problems related to writing, rhetoric, reading, pedagogy and teacher-training, literacy broadly conceived, popular culture and media, community discourses, and multimodal and digital composing.

ENGLISH

Collision Literary Magazine 
Founded in 2001, Collision Literary Magazine publishes undergraduate writing and art from all over the world. Collision accepts fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art, with a particular interest in experimental work that challenges style and structure.

Mosaic
Mosaic is the University of California, Riverside’s undergraduate literary journal. In 1959, Mosaic began as a small group of poets, and has expanded into a home for all writers, musicians, and artists. They are completely undergraduate-run, and publish one volume of prose, poetry, and art every year.

The Oswald Review
Established in 1999, The Oswald Review is the first intercollegiate refereed journal of criticism and research in the discipline of English. Published annually, it accepts submission in the field of English from undergraduates in this country and abroad. A faculty member's endorsement is required.

HISTORY

The Vanderbilt Historical Review
The Vanderbilt Historical Review is a student-run, undergraduate journal of history that strives to provide a forum that promotes the discussion of history and help showcase the exceptional work of students from all over the world. The editorial board of The Vanderbilt Historical Review is composed of undergraduate students at Vanderbilt University who have a keen interest in history, writing, publishing, and digital humanities.

Columbia Journal of History
Columbia Journal of History (CJH) is an independent, peer-reviewed undergraduate research publication that promotes intellectual inquiry and recognizes outstanding historical literature on diverse subjects. The journal was founded to provide opportunities for undergraduate students to contribute their research to the field of history.

Ezra's Archives
Ezra's Archives is a publication put forth biannually by the Cornell Historical Society. This journal showcases stellar examples of undergraduate research in the field of history.

History Matters: An Undergraduate Journal of Historical Research
History Matters: An Undergraduate Journal of Historical Research is an online journal published annually by the Department of History at Appalachian State University. The journal is edited by undergraduate students with the help of a faculty board.

PHILOSOPHY

Aporia
Aporia is an undergraduate journal of philosophy at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Aporia is published twice yearly: an online edition in the fall, and a print edition in the spring. The staff of Aporia consists of philosophy students at Brigham Young University.

Episteme
Episteme is a student-run journal that aims to recognize and encourage excellence in undergraduate philosophy by providing examples of some of the best work currently being done in undergraduate philosophy programs. Episteme is distinguished as being the oldest undergraduate philosophy publication of its kind.

STANCE: An International Undergraduate Philosophy Journal
Stance: An International Undergraduate Philosophy Journal is produced and edited entirely by undergraduate students. They aim to enrich student learning by providing an opportunity for undergraduate students to have their original scholarly work reviewed by or published in a peer-reviewed academic journal.

 

SOCIAL SCIENCE

Intersect: The Stanford Journal of Science, Technology, and Society
Intersect is an international Science, Technology, and Society research journal run by undergraduate students at Stanford University and supported by the Program in STS at Stanford. It publishes research and scholarship on the social factors that shape, underwrite, and/or inhibit research and invention, just as these social forces are, in turn, shaped by evolving science and technology. 

POLITICAL SCIENCE

Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas
Compass is an online journal that provides a space for the work of talented undergraduates who have original and well-articulated insights on important ideas and issues relating to American democracy understood in the broad contexts of political philosophy, history, literature, economics, and culture.

Pi Sigma Alpha Undergraduate Journal of Politics 
The Pi Sigma Alpha Undergraduate Journal of Politics is a journal of undergraduate research in political science and government. The Journal welcomes submissions from undergraduates of any class or major; submissions from Pi Sigma Alpha members are especially encouraged.

Seriatim Journal of American Politics 
The Seratim Journal of American Politics aims to support an engaged citizenry by fostering an open marketplace of ideas and encouraging the productive exchange of political speech. By using academic papers as well as original work, they hope to bring greater meaning to students’ work inside the classroom by making it accessible to a wider audience. 

INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

Hemispheres: Tufts University Journal of International Affairs
Hemispheres: The Tufts University Journal of International Affairs, the oldest publication of its kind, addresses a variety of social, economic, political, and legal issues, both contemporary and historical, within the framework of international relations. Selected through a double-blind peer review process, the articles contained in the journal reflect the diverse views of students from across the United States and around the world.

Journal of Undergraduate International Studies
The Journal of Undergraduate International Studies (JUIS), based at UW-Madison, is one of only two nationally distributed undergraduate international studies journals in the country. They seek to publish academic articles that give voice to a body of typically unseen, yet thorough and often novel, scholarship.

Southern California International Review
SCIR is a global undergraduate international studies journal published biannually and funded by the School of International Relations at the University of Southern California. Article topics published in the journal range from economic and political issues to cultural and social themes. The journal seeks to foster and enhance discussion between theoretical and policy-oriented research regarding significant global issues.

PSYCHOLOGY

The Journal of Psychology and the Behavioral Sciences
The Journal of Psychology and the Behavioral Sciences is a peer-reviewed undergraduate research periodical published by the School of Psychology and Counseling of Fairleigh Dickinson University at the Florham Campus. JPBS offers undergraduate students, as well as graduate students and faculty, an opportunity to publish in a recognized academic journal.

Journal of European Psychology Students
The Journal of European Psychology Students is an open-access, double-blind, peer-reviewed journal for psychology students worldwide. By ensuring that authors are always provided with extensive feedback, JEPS gives psychology students the chance to gain experience in publishing and to improve their scientific skills.

Journal of Interpersonal Relations, Intergroup Relations and Identity
The Journal of Interpersonal Relations, Intergroup Relations and Identity is an English-French international scientific journal published annually in April. Their mission is to offer undergraduate students a unique opportunity to fully experience the scientific method from the development of original ideas to their diffusion, through the process of peer reviewing. JIRIRI also aims to promote the conception and expression of new theoretical ideas in the fields of identity, interpersonal and intergroup relations.

Digital America
Digital America is an online journal that focuses on digital art and culture, founded in 2012 by a class, named “Digital America,” at the University of Richmond. They focus on work that thrives in the browser frame, celebrating experimental internet art that may never live in a gallery, and looking for new perspectives on popular culture, digital culture, and art.

Nota Bene
Nota Bene is a journal of musicology developed by the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University Canada. It seeks to publish essays of a high critical and rhetorical standard, written by undergraduate students from universities around the world. Essays in historical musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies, music theory, music education, and interdisciplinary subjects with a focus on the above are invited.

Mosaic
Mosaic is the University of California, Riverside’s undergraduate literary journal. Forbes and Fifth

Minnesota Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics
The Minnesota Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics focuses on original mathematical research done primarily by undergraduate researchers in all areas of mathematics and its applications.  Faculty may be involved in the research and writing, through advising, mentoring, and editing, but the majority of the original work and writing must be completed by students.

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal is devoted entirely to papers written by undergraduates on topics related to the mathematical sciences. In order to maintain a high level of exposition, each paper must be sponsored by a mathematician familiar with the student's work and each paper will be refereed.

Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal
Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal is a professional-level, open-access science journal that is committed to publishing manuscripts of the highest scholarship resulting from significant scientific research or outstanding scientific analysis. CUSJ is published annually in the spring semester, with life sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences featured; any currently enrolled undergraduate is welcome to submit their work.

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science
The Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science aims to increase scientific awareness within the Dartmouth community by providing an interdisciplinary forum for sharing undergraduate research and enriching scientific knowledge. The DUJS prints quarterly journals that include science news and review articles, along with research by undergraduates.

Journal of Young Investigators
The Journal of Young Investigators aims to improve undergraduate science training by providing innovative, high-quality educational experiences in science writing, publication and the peer-review process. Anyone who has written a manuscript during his or her undergraduate studies is welcome to submit.

Consilience: The Journal of Sustainable Development
Consilience: The Journal of Sustainable Development is an online journal dedicated to promoting dialogue on sustainable development by bringing students, researchers, professors, and practitioners from a variety of disciplines and geographical regions in direct conversation with each other through an online, academically rigorous medium. By providing a public platform for discussion, they hope to encourage a global community to think more broadly, thoroughly, and analytically about sustainable development.

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences is a faculty-refereed international journal devoted to the publication of high quality research by undergraduates in all agricultural research problem areas including, but not limited, to those described in the USDA, CSREES Manual of Classification of Agricultural and Forestry Research at http://cwf.uvm.edu/cris/revman/manvi_rp.htm.

IMPULSE: The Premier Undergraduate Neuroscience Journal: App State
IMPULSE is the first international, online neuroscience journal for undergraduate publications. With an increasing emphasis in universities on undergraduate research experiences, IMPULSE offers those undergraduates who seek opportunities in neuroscientific disciplines the chance to complete the scientific process, including writing up the finished research, having it peer reviewed, and ultimately having it published in the scientific literature.

Journal of Undergraduate Chemistry Research
The Journal of Undergraduate Chemistry Research is a peer review journal published quarterly with papers of original research performed by undergraduates of all aspects of chemistry including analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, physical and polymers.

Journal of Undergraduate Reports in Physics
The Journal of Undergraduate Reports in Physics is a peer-reviewed publication of the Society of Physics Students comprised of research, outreach, and scholarly reporting. The Journal is devoted to reports authored by undergraduates in physics, astronomy, and their related fields.
