Generative AI Tools available through Connecticut College

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can learn from and mimic large amounts of data to create content such as text, images, music, videos, code, and more, based on inputs or prompts. This guide is an overview of generative AI tools available to all current students, faculty, and staff through Connecticut College. There are important considerations to keep in mind when using these tools, including information security and data privacy, compliance, copyright, and academic integrity.

Many other generative AI tools are available to the public, including tools that are free to use. Never enter classified or proprietary data into any publicly available generative AI tool.

Best practices for using generative AI:

1. Data Privacy & Security

  • Avoid entering sensitive, personal, or confidential information into AI tools.
  • Be aware that AI-generated content may be stored and used to train future models.
  • Check AI platform privacy policies before using them, especially for academic or administrative work.

2. Responsibility for AI-Generated Content

  • Users are accountable for any content they generate, modify, or use from AI tools.
  • AI-generated text, images, or data should be reviewed and verified for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Clearly indicate when AI has been used in academic work, teaching materials, or official communications.

3. Academic Integrity & Ethical Use

  • Follow course, department, or institutional guidelines on AI use in assignments and research. See the Student Handbook section on Academic Integrity.
  • Do not use AI to engage in plagiarism, fabricate sources, or bypass learning objectives.
  • When incorporating AI-generated content, properly attribute its use per academic standards.

4. AI as a Supplement, Not a Replacement

  • Use AI tools to enhance learning, writing, and research, but not as a substitute for critical thinking.
  • Faculty and staff should guide students on appropriate AI use within their disciplines.
  • When in doubt, consult instructors, supervisors, or librarians for guidance on ethical AI use.
