Broadly defined, Digital Art History refers to the use of digital tools and methods of analysis to discover and answer research questions in art history and to present art historical data in new ways. It applies the Digital Humanities tools and methods most relevant to art historical scholarship, such as image analysis, mapping, and network analysis. Digital art historians are using linked open data from art museums to analyze museum collections, for example. They are visualizing networks of artists and art dealers within the context of historical maps, and using image recognition technologies to find new connections that human eyes have not yet revealed.
