AI Literacy for Campus

Many educators don't support the use of AI writing detectors

These detectors result in both false negatives and false positives, which can result in tagging a student paper as written by AI when it wasn't.

In addition, if your native language isn't English, these tools will often tag your writing as written by AI. See GPT detectors are biased against non-native English writers - Weixin Liang, et al.

Instructors are creating classroom policies on the use of generative AI.

As AI tools become increasingly available and sophisticated, it is essential for all faculty to give students clear expectations for how students can or cannot use AI tools in each course. The absence of guidelines for AI usage in a course will likely be seen by students as authorization of their use.

The student handbook at Connecticut College includes additional language in the Academic Dishonesty policies regarding unauthorized use of AI tools.
